For the purpose of this debate, “Big Religion” refers to large, centralised and institutionalised religious organisations with millions of adherents across multiple countries, formal hierarchical leadership structures, and the capacity to exert significant political, legal, economic, or cultural influence beyond individual belief; these institutions claim authority over doctrine, morality, and social norms, often enforce uniform interpretations, and frequently control substantial wealth, land, media, or educational infrastructure (for example, the Catholic Church). “Breaking up” Big Religion means dismantling these large-scale structures so that religious practice and organisation are confined to small, local, community-based groups that meet voluntarily, have no overarching central authority, and exercise no broad political or societal power.
